Aresan Clan Summaries

I have added a series of summaries, each summing up ten parts (parts 1-10, parts 11-20, parts 21-30, etc) of the Aresan Clan serial in about 400 or so words. You can see the lot of them, under the "Summary Label." So, if you want to go back and quickly catch up on everything that's happened, or just review what you've read, it's there.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 91-100

The Arbiter, Roderick, visits Lipmon, who is recovering from his injuries in luxury at the High Priest’s palace. Lipmon tells Roderick that he wants to recover promptly so that he can march with the army in a few days. Roderick then returns to Orinda, and, from his home, he summons the Creature of Virtue. He presents a piece of clothing from Mill to the Creature and tells her to kill Mill if he should ever near the city.

Chrissina, an Itinerant female, is in charge of taking care of Amida, who is still interred in the basement room, and the two women get along well.

Darma helps Annsi get ready for a dinner party at a wealthy friend’s place. Darma dresses her up in one of her own nicer dresses, and tells her of the importance of appearances and that none of the eligible bachelors she hopes to meet there can know she’s a soldier.

Strya unexpectedly visits Anders’ home in the early morning. Strya tells him that the Fourth Order is about to march with a large army in the direction of the Aresan Clan and the Omnia. Anders hastily organizes the Closed Table and they agree to organize troops for a defense immediately. A messenger is sent to Summer Park to speak with the Grand Royal of the Aresan Clan.  He also agrees to contribute troops and orders Alles to be put in charge of the Aresan troops.

Erek-Monte and his men meet with Noone and the Sages, and they exchange prisoners, returning Jule to the Aresans and Amida to the Sages. Noone is able to keep Jule’s collection of books.

Tine travels to visit the legendary General Burlingam, who lives a hermit’s existence on the far side of the Great Dunes in a cave. They try to persuade the General to lead their troops against the Fourth Order, and succeed by telling him that this will be a truly great war, one worthy of his greatness.

Out of Waldoon the Fourth Order armies begin marching. Lipmon, decked out in a soldier’s armor that he received as a gift joins them, despite the royal surgeon telling him that he is not fully healed and that he risks reopening his wounds.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 81-90

Kayla asks Mill what he knows, claiming that she has been specifically asked about the Omnia’s plans of conquest. Mill doesn’t deny that what he said before about the conquest. Afterwards, she is released from prison, revealing that she was a confederate of Mill’s captors.

Erek-Monte drags Amida to a basement-level room from some ancient building and locks her within in order to secure her so they don’t have to drag her around with them. In the Cloisters, because Amida hasn’t been heard from, the Sages decide to put Jule in an improvised holding cell in the Cloisters’ storage cellar.

Alles, as promised, speaks with the Closed Table in private and lays out why securing the northern border is strategically and militaristically sensible. Though Anders and his faction oppose him, a majority is in favor, and the Omnia agrees to assist in fortifications for the Aresan Clan. Anders is infuriated, and starts contemplating how he could quietly get rid of Alles, especially since he is the major barrier to forcing the Aresans to join the Omnia.

Dylan-Nantes visits a farmhouse where he had slain the entire family simply in order that he might steal the father’s clothes and thus blend in when he had entered Lamosa. He changes back into his Itinerant clothes and leaves.

It is the first day of Madrus, which is a feast day. At the cloisters Noone and Eloh join the Sages and the residents of the cloisters for a large feast, at which Arrs and Sanda are seen flirting. Salles shares the feast with Darma, whose husband, Dorin, has recently returned to spend the first evening of Madrus with her. Unfortunately, Dorin eats profusely, making him tired and making it difficult for Darma to persuade him to sleep with her that night. Meanwhile, Annsi spends Madrus with her mother, who encourages her daughter to marry.

In Waldoon, Robair returns, reporting to Saurek that Still Creek is destroyed and it is the fault of the Omnians or the Aresans. Saurek communes with God, and then gives a speech to the gathered armies to the effect that the Fourth Order has come under attack and they will conquer their heathen opponents.

Mill is taken from his cell and is sentenced to forty lashes and excommunication. It is administered publicly in front of a large and hostile crowd. After being whipped, fatigued and in pain, he is thrown in his cell again, with no indication that he will soon be released.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 71-80

Lipmon is only injured and is sutured by Saurek’s personal surgeon. After seeing Mill get nearly killed, Saurek decides to hasten the investigation, sending an advance party to Still Creek immediately. He climbs to the top of the tall Citadel tower where he is able to talk with God. Saurek hears God telling him that the boy is special and interprets it as a message to send armies to attack the Omnia and the Aresan Clan.

Alles and Annsi join Darma and Salles for dinner at Darma’s. Darma gets along well with Annsi, and Alles is easily persuaded to help the Sages with the issue of fortifications. He promises to speak with the Closed Table, the leaders of the thirteen tribes who confer in private and make decisions for the Omnia. After Alles and Annsi leave, Darma seduces Salles, telling him that her husband, Dorin, is infertile. Dorin will be returning the next day, which will be the first day of Madrus. She will seduce her husband and if they have a child, he’ll assume it’s his. After sex, they lay on the ground and Salles tells her about the origin of the order of Sages.

Meanwhile, Dylan-Nantes wanders the streets looking for a house to invade. He is tempted to enter Darma’s house, but, seeing the light on, he decides against it. Instead, he breaks into the house of Darma’s neighbor, enters the room of a young girl and then slits her neck after waking her.

The Fourth Order advance party, led by Robair, hastily rides to Still Creek to investigate Lipmon’s story. They find, as he said, the place destroyed and in ashes. Robair discovers the remains of an animal that were sacrificed in the Omnian/Aresan style, indicating that it was they who attacked.

Mill is imprisoned in a dank dungeon. He is then brought before an interrogator, Janake, who asks him what he knows about the attack on Still Creek. Mill tells Janake what little he knows, but Janake thinks he’s holding something back. He burns him with a hot poker. To stop the torture, Mill tells Janake the Omnia attacked Still Creek as part of a plan of widespread conquest of the region. Janake returns him to his jail. A woman named Kayla who claims to be a spy from Omnia like him joins him in his jail cell. She says she has been tortured and wants to die to avoid more torture.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 61-70

Mill tries to ambush and kill Lipmon before he and Roderick leave Orinda, but he is unsuccessful, and has to secretly follow them to Waldoon.

That evening Jule sneaks out of the Cloisters to meet with a man from the Itinerants. The Sages have Jule under constant surveillance, and so witness the meeting. Noone orders Amida to follow this Itinerant courier. She hastily packs a backpack and pursues.

Anders has his three official philosophers of state, Apamix, Taney and Sidd, investigate the powers of Tann, the Prodigal Prodigy. They bring in two soldiers who are afraid of Tann and have heard exaggerated stories about his power to kill with his eyes. They expose Tann’s eyes to the two soldiers, who both have strong, emotional reactions. The philosophers conclude that the child has power to manipulate people’s feelings via eye contact.

Amida follows the Itinerant messenger all night, all the way to Erek-Monte’s camp. She tries to spy on them, but is captured and is taken by Erek-Monte as a prisoner.

Lipmon and Roderick arrive in Waldoon and travel to the grand Palace of Adrus where they meet with the High Priest, Saurek. Lipmon tells Saurek of the destruction of Still Creek and of Tann. Saurek reprimands him because they treated Tann like a prophet of God, whereas, according to Fourth Order theology, the High Priest is the only true prophet of god. But Saurek says he’ll investigate it, and get back to them. Lipmon is frustrated, since he perceives Saurek to be moving slowly wants prompt action.

When Anders returns to his Private House and reclines in his private bath, he is unexpectedly visited by Dylan-Nantes, who hands him the message from Mill. Upon reading the message, Anders is angry with Mill for not killing Lipmon.

At the Palace of Adrus, as Lipmon and Roderick depart, they are suddenly attacked by Mill, who tries to stab Lipmon. The palace guards capture Mill.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 51-60

Noone and Eloh search the rooms of Jule and Arrs. They find nothing suspicious in Arrs’ room, but Jule seems probably to be the perpetrator since he possesses a dark lamp that has been recently used. Noone is intrigued by his massive collection of books.

In the woods south of Orinda, Mill encounters Erek-Monte and his tribe. Not wanting to take the news all the way to Lamosa, he pays Dylan-Nantes and writes a message for him to take to Anders. Mill then heads back to Orinda to be with his lover, Anika while Dylan-Nantes heads to Lamosa.

Darma takes Salles to a dance hall in the evening in an upscale part of town. There is dancing and music and Salles struggles to follow the steps of the dance, but Darma has a great time.

Alles and his men finish another day of marching, arriving now within sight of the Outer Bulwark, a high outer wall around the edges of Sanlosslee park, the valley in which Lamosa is located. Sharing the tent with Alles one last night, Annsi is told by Alles that she needn’t sleep with him, and that he would always protect her as a fellow soldier no matter whether she slept with him or not. Spontaneously, Annsi decides that she wants to have sex with Alles without her soldier’s sponge, in the hope that he might impregnate her.

The next day, the soldiers arrive in Lamosa and Salles meets with them and invites Annsi and Alles to share dinner with him and Darma at Darma’s place. They both consent.

Mill, worn out from walking for more than a day straight without rest arrives back in Orinda and immediately visits Anika. She tells him that Lipmon is recovering his health and is leaving with Roderick for Waldoon that day. Mill realizes he has to stop Lipmon immediately.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 41-50

Eloh secretly searches the rooms of his three suspects in the Cloisters. He is isn’t able to eliminate any three as suspects, though he does curiously find a sizable collection of books in many languages in Jule’s room, a collection that seems far to expensive for a humble weaver, as Jule claims to be.

Alles’ soldiers march hastily out of fear of Erek-Monte’s troops. Resting for the night, Annsi avoids Alles’ tent. She is attacked by Orick with two other soldiers, who attempt to rape her. They are stopped by Alles, who punishes the three soldiers. He then takes her to his tent and lets her sleep in his bed.

Noone returns late at night to the Cloisters. She is frustrated that Eloh hasn’t found anything out while she’s been away. She interrogates him about the person who hit him on the head in the watermill, and she eliminates Sanda as a suspect as being too short. They also decide how the fire is likely to have been started and resolve to search Arrs and Jule’s rooms again.

Lipmon is visited by Orinda’s leading citizen, Roderick, the Arbiter, who is in charge of taming and controlling the Creature of Virtue. Lipmon recounts the destruction of Still Creek and the kidnapping of Tann. Though Lipmon doesn’t know from where the soldiers came, Roderick suspects they are from the Aresan Clan or the Omnia. Realizing that the attack is an act of war, he decides to take Lipmon to the Fourth Order capital, Waldoon, to speak with the High Priest.

Salles wakes early for exercise and invites Darma to join him, though the Sages’ intricate exercises are supposed to be a secret only known to the Sages. Not having exercise clothes, Darma dresses skimpily and struggles to follow the complex movements of the exercise. Afterwards, Darma shows him about town, and seeing a statue of Neer and Naal, she tells the story of these mythical heroes. The fiancés of brothers Neer and Naal were violated by a powerful tyrant; they vowed revenge, but failed on multiple attempts to kill the tyrant; So Naal killed Neer so that Neer, as a ghost, could successfully kill the tyrant.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 31-40

Erek-Monte and his tribe attack Alles’ soldiers. A soldier named Orick sees Annsi sleeping apart from Alles and thinks that he has rejected her and is no longer providing her protection. Alles and his soldiers try to repel the Itinerants, but they are too quick, escaping with Tann. Erek-Monte kills a soldier, named Lee, who tried to attack him, and after the Itinerants are gone, they bury Lee.

Once Alles realizes that Tann has been taken, he gathers a few soldiers, including Jesek, and they run off in search of Tann. First following a false trail, Alles and his men finally track down the Itinerants, all of them asleep, and they stealthily steal back Tann. But one of Alles’ soldiers, Sorn, decides to take revenge on the death of Lee, by killing one of the Itinerants. This sets of an alarm and the Itinerants pursue.

Lipmon has been saved by a farmer named Merek and is being nursed back to health by him and his wife Maya. Before Lipmon tells anyone, Mill, one of Anders’ spies, living in Orinda, sees Lipmon and hears his story. He considers killing Lipmon (since it will prevent Lipmon from telling anyone of the destruction of Still Creek), but recoils at the idea of murder, and rationalizes not doing so by telling himself that Lipmon will die of illness. Instead, Mill promptly departs Orinda, saying goodbye to his Lover, Anika, knowing that this information about Lipmon needs to be immediately sent to Lamosa. He takes measures to protect himself from the Creature of Virtue, depositing some meat to attract her and making himself smell like tree sap.

After a crude attempt to negotiate, Erek-Monte and his men attack Alles’ soldiers. Alles’ soldiers successfully protect Tann, killing one of the Itinerants, but Dylan-Nantes, an Itinerant, takes vengeance for the death of their comrade by killing Sorn. After this, the Itinerants flee, and though Alles’ men want to take revenge for Sorn’s death, Alles tells them they need to march on.

In Lamosa, Noone and Salles meet with Anders at the Open Table and ask for fortifications. They are rebuffed, but afterwards Noone tells Salles that he is to remain and is to try and meet with his daughter, Annsi, and use her to try to get Alles on their side. Noone then begins to walk back to the Cloisters with Amida, leaving Salles alone with Darma.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 21-30

Salles and Noone arrive in Lamosa. They will be staying at the house of Darma, a housewife married to a wealthy husband who’s away on business. Darma already provides accommodations to Amida and when Noone and Salles arrive, she happily provides them with rooms. She confesses to Salles that she is interested in knowing some of the secrets of the Sages, and that Noone isn’t forthcoming.

Eloh, remaining behind at the cloisters, is charged with investigating who is responsible for the fire of the watermill. While the residents of the Cloisters rebuild it, he investigates three likely suspects, Arrs, Jule and Sanda, the three most recent persons to arrive. All three of them are non-Sages residing at the Cloisters, providing service in exchange for room and board. He tries to engage in conversation with them and subtly discover the information thereby, but discovers little.

That evening, Jesek, a refuge from Orinda, explains his story to Alles’ soldiers, how he came to be their guide to Still Creek. He explains that he got his girlfriend pregnant outside of Madrus, which is a period of time when it is okay to have sex and bear children. Doing so during other times is a great sin, and Orinda is guarded by a large trained feline, called the Creature of Virtue, which protects the forests around Orinda from invaders and to whom violators of Orinda’s laws are fed. Knowing that he and his girlfriend will be fed to the Creature of Virtue, Jesek flees with her to Lamosa. On the way, he sees the citizens of Still Creek worshipping Tann, and carries the story back to Lamosa. In his tent, Alles refuses to let Annsi sleep with him, fearing that she may be corrupted by Tann, and that it might rub off on him.

The next morening, Lipmon approaches Orinda. But as he comes within sight of the city, he is attacked by the Creature of Virtue, which pounces on him and scratches him. She doesn’t eat out his organs, as she normally does, since Lipmon reeks of sickness.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 11-20

Salles investigates the light and discovers that the Cloisters’ watermill is on fire. He finds Eloh, another Sage, lying on the floor inside the watermill and pulls him out, waking up everyone in order to fight the fire. After they tame the fire, Noone, the Eldest of the Sages, interrogates Eloh, who is suffering from smoke inhalation, and he recalls that, before the fire was started, he saw a shadow inside, went to investigate and was knocked out. On a wall, Salles finds a mark in the shape of bird, a sign of the Fourth Order, which indicates that the fire was an act of sabotage by a representative of the Fourth Order.

Lipmon continues his trek, buoyed up by the thought that, though he was disdained by the citizens of his town of Still Creek, he is the lone survivor and their salvation, and he will save Tann from his captors. He is also growing feverish.

Salles leaves the Cloisters, accompanied by Noone, travelling by foot to Lamosa, the capital of the Omnia, in order to ask the Omnia for assistance in building fortifications for their Cloisters.

Amida, a Sage and representative of the Aresan Clan, meets briefly with Anders, the Premier of the Omnia, in Lamosa. The meeting is in the Public House, at the Open Table, a public place where citizens are supposed to present their grievances to the leaders. In private, Anders tells a confidant that he eagerly wants the Aresan Clan to join the Omnia. He also meets with Strya, a courier to the many spies Anders employs outside Lamosa.

Alles and his soldiers are randomly attacked by a pack of wolves. Annsi leaps inside the palanquin with Tann for her own protection. The wolves are driven away, but Alles, seeing Annsi emerging from the palanquin, is wary of her. He fears that she might be under Tann’s influence due to contact with him in the small palanquin.

Erek-Monte, a leader of a small Itinerant Tribe (one of many small roaming tribes that occupy the sparsely populated, mountainous region between the territory of the Omnia and the Aresan clan and the territory of the Fourth Order), sees the soldiers carrying a palanquin, and is curious about who is this little boy and why they’re carrying him in such a way.

Aresan Clan Summary - Parts 1-10

Alles, a military leader from the Aresan Clan, infiltrates a small village called Sill Creek pretending to be a blind traveller. Still Creek is a member of the theocratic empire of the Fourth Order, which is hostile to the Aresan Clan and their allies, the Omnia, an alliance of thirteen smaller clans. The citizens of Still Creek are preparing a feast for a boy named Tann, who they hold in great reverence. Alles kidnaps Tann, who he refers to as a “sable” and is believed to have power to manipulate people with his eyes. After taking the child, Alles and his soldiers, including Annsi, attack the village, killing everyone they find and burning the village to the ground, commemorating their victory with an animal sacrifice.

One citizen of Still Creek survives, named Lipmon, and, though he was injured by Alles, he starts a long walk towards the nearest Fourth Order city, Orinda. He intends to tell of the destruction of his town and the kidnapping of Tann, who he, along with all the other citizens of Still Creek, loved and adored.

As the soldiers carry Tann (who Alles has named Samuel) in a closed palanquin, Annsi takes care of him and talks to him. The soldiers, though, think Tann is a bad omen and has dark powers. At night, Annsi sleeps with Alles, using a “soldier’s sponge” as a contraceptive, since Alles can protect her against the lecheries of the other male soldiers

Salles, a Sage, living at their isolated residence, the Cloisters, is up late transcribing an illustrated manuscript. In the midst of his work, he notices an orange and yellow glow outside.
