Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal, has picked
24 finalists to eschew college for two years. The 24 finalists will receive $100,000 and spend the time trying to develop business ideas. The idea basically is that college is simply
not worth it for some students (it's
expensive and time-consuming, might be a
bubble), and they'd be better off finding success through a different route. Thiel's fellowship is
not popular with everyone, but it raises questions at a time when many are seeing an expansion of the number of students going to college as a worthwhile goal, and the stats are showing that more and more college grads are going into
careers that don't require college degrees.
